Network-Friendly Gossiping

چکیده
The emergence of large-scale distributed applications based on many-to-many communication models, e.g., broadcast and decentralized group communication, has an important impact on the underlying layers, notably the Internet routing infrastructure. To make an e ective use of network resources, protocols should both limit the stress (amount of messages) on each infrastructure entity (routers, links), and balance as much as possible the load in the network. Most protocols use application-level metrics such as delays to improve e ciency of content dissemination or routing, but the extend to which such application-centric optimizations help reduce and balance the load imposed to the infrastructure is unclear. In this paper, we elaborate on the design of such network-friendly protocols and associated metrics. More speci cally, we investigate randomness-based gossip dissemination. We propose and evaluate di erent ways of making this representative protocol network-friendly, while keeping its desirable properties (robustness and low delays). Simulations of the proposed methods using synthetic and real network topologies convey and compare their abilities to reduce and balance the load while keeping good performance.

Gossiping with Bounded Size Messages in ad hoc Radio Networks
We study deterministic algorithms for the gossiping problem in ad hoc radio networks under the assumption that each combined message contains at most b(n) single messages or bits of auxiliary information, where b is an integer function and n is the number of nodes in the network. We term such a restricted gossiping problem b(n)-gossiping. We show that √ n-gossiping in an ad hoc radio network on...
متن کاملTime Efficient Gossiping in Known Radio Networks
We study here the gossiping problem (all-to-all communication) in known radio networks, i.e., when all nodes are aware of the network topology. We start our presentation with a deterministic algorithm for the gossiping problem that works in at most n units of time in any radio network of size n. This is an optimal algorithm in the sense that there exist radio network topologies, such as: a line...
متن کاملInformation-Sharing and Privacy in Social Networks
We present a new model for reasoning about the way information is shared among friends in a social network, and the resulting ways in which it spreads. Our model formalizes the intuition that revealing personal information in social settings involves a trade-off between the benefits of sharing information with friends, and the risks that additional gossiping will propagate it to people with who...

In this paper we study the gossiping problem (all-to-all communication) in radio networks where all nodes are aware of the network topology. We start our presentation with a deterministic gossiping algorithm that works in at most n units of time in any radio network of size n. This algorithm is optimal in the worst case scenario since there exist radio network topologies, such as lines, stars a...
متن کاملOptimal Gossiping with Unit Size Messages in Known Topology Radio Networks
Gossiping is a communication primitive where each node of a network possesses a unique message that is to be communicated to all other nodes in the network. We study the gossiping problem in known topology radio networks where the schedule of transmissions is precomputed in advance based on full knowledge about the size and the topology of the network. In addition we consider the case where it ...
